Assisting Youth with Mental Health Concerns
Coleman Child and Adolescent Services are unique services designed for children and adolescents with emotional and/or behavioral difficulties. Specialized services are designed to support recovery and resiliency for children and their unique needs becasue we understand the importance of maintaining a child-friendly environment in successfully treating children and adolescents. Child psychiatry is provided by a team of licensed providers including child psychiatrists, APRNs, RNs and LPNs.
Common reasons for referrals to psychiatry for children and adolescents include:
- suicidal thoughts
- treatment for ADHD
- poor school performance and anger managment
- teacher or guidance counselor referrals
- PCP referrals
- treatment for depression
- treatment for anxiety
- treatment for bipolar disorder
Child psychiatrists and advanced practice nurses begin by providing a thorough diagnostic assessment on the child or adolescent, which includes meeting times with parents or guardians and a complete review of school records.
The psychiatric team will seek input from the individual patient, family members, adocates, behavioral health professionals and professionals from other disciplines in the development of an effective recovery plan. This plan is used to guide the patient's treatment experience at Coleman and will be updated annually by request of any team member.
If needed, psychiatrists and APRNs prescribe medications as appropriate to presenting symptoms as well as family and and patient's wishes and needs with the consideration of allergies, substance use, current medical history and physical status.
Coleman Professional Services provide case management social work services to individuals and groups based on their level of care by assessing needs. obtaining services, providing treatment and supports as well as managing crisis. This is accomplished through planning, coordination, monitoring, adjusting and advocating for services and supports that help individuals achieve their goals for living in the community. Case management coordinate services for children and families with community resources, schools and courts.
Case managers use ongoing assessments to determine current needs and make appropriate referrals to improve the life of each person served, while increasing his or her functionality at home, in school and in social environments.
Individuals are referred to case management services based on a diagnostic assessment completed by a licensed professional and the amount of time in services is individualized to meet the needs of each person's recovery process.
Individual and Group Counseling
Counseling services are provided by trained staff who listen and understand a multitude of problems. Coleman staff will work with the child client as well as the client's family to develop a plan designed to help in the journey toward feeling better with friends, family, school, home and community.
