Decision-making Assistance for Adults
Coleman Social Services’ Guardianship Services provides support and compassionate decision-making services to vulnerable adults identified as needing a Guardian of the Person. Coleman guardians promote the health and well-being of adults under guardianship. Our guardianship program provides personal individualized services when family or other supports are not able to be there for their loved ones.
What is Legal Guardianship?
Legal guardianship is a legal process where the Probate Court determines that an individual is incapable of managing his or her personal affairs due to a mental or physical impairment. A guardian is appointed by the court to make decisions that are in the best interest of the person under guardianship and to ensure that his or her personal needs are met.
Guardians provide consent for medical treatment, obtain and coordinate community services, visit their wards regularly, communicate with family, friends, caregivers and service providers, attend Probate Court hearings and complete Probate Court reports.
An individual under guardianship is encouraged to participate, to the maximum extent of their abilities, in all decisions that affect them. Coleman guardians work to maintain the individual at the highest level of independence. At Coleman, we always provide services that improve the welfare, dignity, self-reliance and independence of each individual under Guardianship.
Coleman guardians receive regular training and operate under nationally recognized standards of practice. Coleman Professional Services is a member of both the Ohio Guardianship Association and the National Guardianship Association .
